Helvetica was designed in 1957 in Switzerland. The designers were Eduard Hoffman and Max Miedinger. Originally, it was known as Die Neue Haas Grotesk and it differed greatly from many of the fonts that were used for design purposes in those days. In other words, it was a font that was designed specifically for being read and was not to impart an exterior meaning or motive while being read. The name was changed to Helvetica in 1960 in order to have more of an international appeal.

Since the original Helvetica was created, there are a number of different variations that can be used as well. These include Helvetica light, rounded, compressed, Neue and textbook. These are typically a slight variation on the original. There are also additional language variances for Helvetica, including Japanese, Korean and Greek.

Many people have compared Helvetica to Ariel, and they are very similar to each other. Ariel was developed in 1982 and most people are not able to distinguish the differences between the two fonts but there are differences. The primary difference between the two fonts is the direction of the stroke. Helvetica uses strokes that are either vertical or horizontal and Ariel tends to use strokes that are diagonal.
